Some individuals turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with the effects of past trauma. While trauma can be a cause for concern, there are several types of therapies that can help.

At Ethan Crossing, we offer treatment for addiction to drugs and alcohol. However, we also acknowledge the connection between trauma and substance abuse. Through trauma-informed care, we provide a safe space for individuals who are working to overcome the underlying causes of addiction. Trauma-Informed Care for Co-Occurring Disorders

trauma therapy at a rehab center in ohioThere are a handful of treatments available to help those who are struggling with both past trauma and addiction. Our trauma-informed approach helps our clients work through the effects of trauma as they build healthy coping skills to avoid relapse.

  • Individual counseling – An individual therapy program takes place on a one-on-one basis with a qualified counselor. You will participate in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) so you can change the negative patterns of thinking created by trauma.
  • Group counseling – A group therapy program often takes the form of support groups. In support groups, several individuals who are struggling with addiction come together and share their experiences. Learning how others have coped with similar situations can empower trauma survivors so they feel less alone.
  • Medication – Medicine cannot treat trauma disorders themselves, but it can treat the symptoms. Many people with trauma disorders benefit from taking medication prescribed for depression, anxiety, attention deficit, extreme mood shifts, and more so they can focus on recovery during treatment.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient Treatment

Trauma-informed treatment can take place in both an outpatient and inpatient setting. An outpatient treatment program is more flexible. Therefore, it allows patients to visit their therapist in an office setting, usually once a week. Inpatient treatment, however, requires the patient to stay in a residential treatment program. Placing a trauma survivor in a healing environment can help them process trauma and begin the journey to recovery.

Trauma Disorders

Several different conditions can result from trauma.

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – Post-traumatic stress disorder is a type of acute anxiety that occurs after being exposed to a single traumatic event and needs a PTSD treatment program, such as when someone is in a car accident.
  • Acute stress disorder – Acute stress disorder is similar to but usually milder than PTSD.
  • Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) – People who are repeatedly exposed to traumatic events like physical or sexual abuse develop a more complicated form of PTSD.
  • Trauma-based personality disorders – In some cases, childhood trauma results in the development of trauma-based personality disorders. Disorders include dissociative identity disorder (DID) otherwise specified dissociative disorder (OSDD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD).
  • Dissociative disorders – Other dissociative disorders can develop as the brain’s way of coping with and escaping the trauma. One symptom is depersonalization, in which one feels that they are not themselves. Another dissociative disorder is derealization, which is the feeling a person gets when they feel that they themselves are not real or that their surroundings are not real.
